On October 6, 1993, just two and a half months after Michael Jordan’s father James was murdered at a North Carolina highway rest area, MJ announced his retirement from basketball. Over the next year, Jordan began making plans to build a state-of-the-art Boys and Girls Club facility on Chicago’s impoverished West Side. To honor Jordan’s career and to raise money for the “James Jordan Boys and Girls Club”, the Michael Jordan Retirement Party was planned for November 1, 1994 at the United Center. Among the basketball luminaries in attendance at the party was former Detroit Pistons head coach Chuck Daly. Jordan never played for Daly in the NBA, but he did play for him as a member of the Dream Team that steamrolled to the 1992 Olympic Gold Medal in Barcelona, Spain. So it was that following the “Retirement Party”, Michael Jordan sent this note of thanks to Chuck Daly for attending. The note, on off-white paper measuring 7¼ X 10½, is dated November 28, 1994, and type-written on Michael Jordan letterhead. The MJ “Jumpman” logo is printed in red at the top, center of the page. At the bottom, below the closing, Jordan has signed his name in black ink. The page has 2 creases where it was folded and placed in the envelope, which is also included here. Addressed to Chuck Daly in W. Bloomfield, MI, and postmarked 29 Nov 1994 in Chicago, IL, the envelope includes MJ’s return address on the reverse, matching the address on the letterhead. Daly passed away in 2009 after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. Included here is a letter of authenticity from Daly’s Estate, written and signed by his wife, Terry Daly, and dated June 24, 2010. Also included is an LOA from PSA/DNA.
