With the exception of two years of military duty, three time All-Star Johnny Murphy played for the New York Yankees from 1932 to 1946. Meanwhile, The Yankee Clipper played for the Bronx Bombers beginning in 1936 and, with the exception of three years of military service, played with the Yankees until he retired after the ’51 season. In the years Murphy and DiMaggio played together, the Yankees won numerous World Series titles. This lot features a Hillerich & Bradsby, game used 36-inch Joe DiMaggio “Old Timers Game” bat from 1966. This Old Timers day was also a DiMaggio tribute and he was honored, it marked the 25th Anniversary of his 56 game hit streak!! Following the Old Timer’s Day festivities, Joltin’ Joe gifted the bat to his former teammate, signing and inscribing the barrel in blue marker as follows: “To John Murphy, To My Good Friend and Teammate, Best Wishes.” Though the signature and inscription has faded some over time, it still remains legible. Wonderful piece of Yankee memorabilia gifted from one of the greatest Yankees of all-time to his valued former teammate. This bat comes with a photo of Joe D giving it to Johnny Murphy in the Locker room after the 1966 Old timers day game, and also a personal signed LOA from Johnny Murphy attesting to the authenticity of this bat.
