Encapsulated with Autograph Grade NM+ 7.5 by PSA/DNA (#Q05361). Two New York Yankees immortals – both, in their own ways, responsible for the franchise's decades of success – have signed the front of this real-photo postcard in bold fountain pen ink. Equipped with outstanding, built-in provenance, the item carries a handwritten testimony on its back from the person who gathered the exceptional signatures. It reads, in full: "I obtained these autographs on March 20, 1934 at the Braves Waterfront Park winter quarters. Babe Ruth was just returning to his playing position Left Field for the Yanks + I ran out on the field + asked him to sign this. Just after he was taken out of the game because many more autograph seekers collected nearby. J. Ruppert is the owner of the N.Y. Yankees." Despite their many publicized arguments over Ruth's contracts, Hall of Famers Babe Ruth (1895-1948) and New York Yankees owner Col. Jacob Ruppert (1867-1939) were personal friends. Ruth was one of the last people to see the Colonel before he passed away, and the slugger reported years later that during their final visit Ruppert called him "Babe" for the first and only time in their 21-year association. Goldin Auctions will be donating 5% of the winning bid price of this lot and all lots in this auction to the Babe Ruth Birthplace Museum.
