October Legends Closing October 29
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/30/2016
Presented is this August 31, 1923 typed in black letter to “Shoeless” Joe Jackson from the law firm of Cannon, Bancroft & Waldron of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The letter refers to a pending trial that they are representing Jackson in, offering him a rough time frame as to when it might occur. The case mentioned in this letter was most likely the successful lawsuit brought by Jackson against White Sox owner Charles Comiskey for recovering back pay during the 1920 and 1921 seasons. The letter is addressed to and reads:
“Mr. Joe Jackson
Americus, Georgia.
Dear Joe:
I cannot tell you the exact date when your case will come up, but it will be reached for trial in about a month from now. I expected it on sooner but the Judges have decided to stay on their summer vacations until the first of October, consequently it will not come up now until sometime during the first or middle part of October. It will not be necessary for your wife to come to Milwaukee, or give any testimony whatsoever, as we can easily win the case without her. All you will have to do is to take the stand when the case comes on for trial, and tell your story, just as the facts are.
I will let you know about ten days in advance as to the exact date when the case will be reached for trial.
Very truly yours,
(Signed Joe Jackson)”
The letter is in excellent condition with fold marks consistent with being placed in an envelope, which accompanies this letter from the Cannon, Bancroft & Waldron return address and addressed to Jackson’s Georgia home with a post mark of August 31, 1923. The letter shows toning from age.
