It was September 5, 2015. The Phillies were in Fenway Park and Jerome Williams was facing Big Papi – David Ortiz – in the 4th inning. In his first time up Ortiz lined a single to short right. The Sox batted around and when he came up for the second time in the inning, Ortiz went deep. With a mighty swing of this Marucci bat, Ortiz hit his 30th homer of the year, setting the new Red Sox record for most consecutive seasons of 30 or more home runs. The former record holder was none other than Ted Williams. This bat has been photo-matched to shots taken of Ortiz during the 4th inning that show he used it when he hit both the single and home run. The blast was Ortiz’s 496th of his career, and seven days later he would become only the 27th player in history to reach 500. The Marucci Papi 34 model bat shows outstanding use and is un-cracked. Many ball marks and stitch impressions can be seen on the barrel along with blue ink transfers and white leather ball scuffs. The impression of a weighted batting donut is visible and cleat marks are evident. The handle has been taped with yellow “Lizard Skin” and a light layer of pine tar to enhance the grip. Ortiz’s number “34” is affixed to the knob end. To cap off this historic bat, Big Papi has signed the barrel in silver pen adding his number “34”. An incredible piece of Red Sox history that put David Ortiz one up on Ted Williams. This bat comes with a Letter of Authenticity from PSA/DNA (1B10027) who have graded this bat a perfect GU 10 and a MLB Authenticated hologram (JB 021455).
