The great home run chase of 1961 saw the M&M Boys, Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle chase the immortal Babe Ruth for the single-season home run record. Maris began to pull away from Mantle in the pursuit of Ruth and Mantle’s season was cut short near the end due to injury. On October 1st, Maris hit the then record 61st home run off of Boston pitcher Tracy Stallard to surpass Ruth. Offered here is the “New York Mirror” newspaper that has the giant headline “61 FOR ROG” with “Souvenir Home-Run Edition” printed below and a picture of Maris and his follow-through swing. The newspaper is dated October 2nd and measures 11 ½ x 14 ½ inches and displays significant toning. The pages are not intact and there is edge and corner wear.
