For the fledgeling New York Nets, 1973-74 couldn’t get any better. Originally called the New Jersey Americans, the team had called three different courts home in as many years. But in 1974 not only did they find a permanent home in the Nassau Coliseum, but they also obtained the services of hometown hero Julius “Dr. J” Erving. The move completely rejuvenated not only the Nets but brought instant credibility to the precarious ABA by siphoning off many NBA fans. By mid-season Erving was undeniably the best player in the league and this was acknowledged by being named the ABA MVP. After winning a franchise record 55 games, the Nets smashed their way through the playoffs with Dr. J being named the ABA Playoff MVP. On May 10, 1974 the Nets beat the Utah Stars 111-100 for the Championship.

The excitement generated by the series was one of the major factors that helped put the ABA on the same par as the NBA. This impressive trophy was awarded to the members of the triumphant New York Nets for their first World Championship. The large trophy has a 16-inch square wooden base on which is perched a 12-inch in diameter silver bowl. Silver basketball players are stationed on each corner (two are missing) and the impressive trophy measures 14-inch tall. The plaque on its front has “NEW YORK NETS” engraved in arched letters. The silver bowl has “A.B.A. CHAMPIONSHIP AWARD” engraved on its front arched above the iconic ABA basketball. The right figurine has been broken off at the ankles but is included and can be repaired. The two figurines at the back corners of the base have been removed, leaving the empty screw sockets. The base shows edge wear from age and storage. There are chips in the finish and a few dents in the wood surface. The silver bowl shows some light scratches and has tarnished with age. A great trophy representing the championship of the most colorful and entertaining professional sports league of all-time.
