Measuring 8 ½ x 14 inches, this flyer was put out by the Georgia Commission on Education in 1966. The flyer was an attempt to discredit civil rights leader Martin Luther King by claiming he was a Communist. A red stamp of “JUL 20 1966” appears at the top left corner, along with “Rosa Parks” handwritten in red marker with a line drawn to her image and “W. Willy” written in green marker at the top. There is a picture of King, sitting in a crowd and himself and four others were numbered in the picture.The flyer reads:
“MARTIN LUTHER KING…AT COMMUNIST TRAINING SCHOOL” “PICTURED (Foreground),
(1) Martin Luther King of the Montgomery Boycott and the Birmingham riots, backed up by the Kennedys;
(2) Abner W. Berry of the Central Committee of the Communist Party;
(3) Aubrey Williams, pres. Of the Southern Conference Education Fund Inc., the Transmission Belt in the South for the Communist Party;
(4) Myles Horton, director of Highlander Folk School for Communist Training, Monteagle, Tenn. These “four horseman” of racial agitation have brought tension, disturbance, strife and violence in their advancement of the Communist doctrine of “racial nationalism.””
This slightly toned flyer has four crease folds, indicating it was folded into a small square, but is in otherwise good condition. This piece offers a unique view of the anti-Martin Luther King sentiment that was prevalent during the mid 1960s.
