George Wallace (1919 – 1998) served as governor of Alabama in three separate terms, two of them consecutive (1963-1967, 1971-1979, 1983-1987). Wallace will be remembered for his “segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever” mantra during his 1963 inaugural address. Wallace also made runs for the White House in 1964, 1968 and 1972, including his run in 1968 as a third-party candidate, the American Independent Party, in which he was the last third-party candidate to receive an electoral college vote. Wallace’s 1972 campaign was derailed when he was shot five times a political rally in Laurel, Maryland. The result of the shooting left him paralyzed until his death in 1998.
Offered is a signed check dated June 24, 1971, while he was governor of Alabama, made out to himself for 000 dollars. This 3 x 8 ¼ inch perforated check was drawn from “Bank of Commerce” of Clayton, Alabama. Wallace signed his name in both the “PAY TO THE ORDER OF” line and the signature line in bold blue marker.
