Presented are three type-written letters given to basketball Hall of Famer Michael Jordan during his college and pro career. The first letter, dated June 14, 1983, was drafted by Poley H. Disney of Bristol-Myers Products. The letter reads: “Dear Michael: The Vitalis Award for Sports Excellence is presented to the most valuable players of college games televised by ESPN. As the makers of Vitalis, we are pleased to present you with the award for your performance against Ohio State on March 25th. Congratulations and best wishes for continued success on and off the field.” Jordan had a game-high 17 points in North Carolina’s 64-51 win over Ohio State during their NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 game.

The second typed letter, dated January 1986, was from David “Moose” Bosson, Vice President of Sales for Cooper Mountain Real Estate, Inc. The letter reads in part “Dear Mike: Please accept the enclosed Prestige Card with our sincere compliments. This card entitles you and your guest t o complimentary skiing, athletic club usage, and golf privileges. Simply bring your Prestige Card to our office, located in the Mountain Plaza lobby, and we will take care of all the arrangements for you.”

The last typed letter came from the 70th Governor of North Carolina, James G. Martin, who served that role from 1985-1993. The letter reads in part: “Dear Mr. Jordan: The North Carolina Museum of History will open a major, year-long, exhibition “North Carolina and the Olympics” on July 9, 1987. The exhibit will feature over 100 athletes with North Carolina connections who have participated in the Olympic Games and will be held in conjunction with The U.S. Olympic Festival scheduled for July 13-26, 1987. An exhibition preview reception will be held at the Museum of History on July 9 at which time we want to give special recognition to North Carolina’s Olympians. Your presence would add a great deal to the exhibit opening, and I hope very much that you will be able to attend. These uniquely Michael Jordan-themed letters are a great insight to the popularity and potential he possessed during has latter college and early pro career.
