From the United States standpoint the 1984 Summer Olympics are perhaps best remembered for sprinter/long jumper Carl Lewis’ four Gold Medal (00 m, 200 m, 4x100 m relay and long jump) performance, tying Jesse Owens legendary feat in the 1936 Games. Sixteen-year-old Mary Lou Retton also became the first gymnast outside Eastern Europe to win the gymnastics all-around competition. This 2” x 2 ½” glimmering gold plated sample medal is one officially produced by Josten’s specifically for “XXIII Olympiad Los Angeles 1984” (the second Olympiad to be hosted in Los Angeles and first since 1932) which is engraved on the medal’s front face with the word “Sample” stamped above and the female “Victory” image hoisting a sheaf of leaves while seated beside the façade of the Los Angeles Coliseum and a horse drawn chariot. Contained in a 7” x 3 ¼” x 8” wooden dual paned window display, the opposite side of the medal is engraved with the image of a victorious athlete being carried on the shoulders of his fellow competitors inside the coliseum with the word “Sample” also engraved above. Sparkling gold medallion is in pristine condition with a Josten’s manufacturer’s label.
