In 1969 the New York Daily News issued a “Portfolio of Stars” collection of 20 drawings of the Miracle Mets. These are 9” X 12” and include Tom Seaver, Nolan Ryan, Gil Hodges among the group. In the late 1980s the News reissued the set in a slightly smaller version as a free premium for new subscribers. Both of these are in this Lot. However, what makes this Lot truly rare is the inclusion of 8 additional original drawings. The listing in the SCD catalogue is only the original 20. However it has been commonly discussed among advanced Mets collectors that others were made, and we now are presenting the complete 8 “missing” drawings. This includes: Bobby Pfeil, Jack DiLaurio, Duffy Dyer, Ed Charles, Rod Gaspar, JC Martin, Cal Koonce, and the 4 coaches on 1 drawing: Berra, Walker, Yost & Pignatano.
These players were originally excluded as the Daily News wanted to limit the size to 20. How many of these 8 were made is any ones guess. Individually pieces pop up every once in a “long” while. Here is a unique chance for any collector of the 1969 Mets.
