Before Ernie Davis won the 1961 Heisman Trophy out of the backfield of Syracuse University (and as the first African-American recipient), he attended the Elmira (NY) Free Academy. The “Elmira Express” was poised for NFL greatness with the Cleveland Browns when leukemia struck him down at age twenty-three. This yearbook, the 1955 E.F.A. Torch belonging to a popular young lady named Marie, has been signed by countless classmates, including Ernie Davis. Davis has inscribed the message “You’ll Be Missed! Ernie” in blue ink beneath the football team photo on page 109, circling his picture as a reminder to young Marie. A touching piece, made all the more emotional when faced with the reality of Davis’s lost youth. This signed and inscribed yearbook comes with a full LOA from JSA (Y63878).
