Considered as one of the top amateur baseball leagues in the country, the Cape Cod League has produced some of baseball’s greatest players and seen a few incarnations. One of those players was Harold “Pie” Traynor, who played for the Falmouth Commodores in 1919. The following year, Traynor joined the Pittsburgh Pirates, where he flourished with a 17-year career, culminating in his election into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1948. The Old Cape Cod Baseball League lasted from 1923-1939 and featured four teams from the towns of Falmouth, Hyannis, Osterville and Chatham. The league was restored after World War II in 1946.
Offered is an extremely rare pendant given to the winners of the 1929 championship Falmouth team. This gold pendant is less than 1-inch in diameter and is shaped and designed like a baseball. Engraved across what would be a side panel of a baseball reads “CHAMPIONS CAP COD LEAGUE 1929” and “W. J. Stewart on the opposite side for Bill Stewart. The pendant has a loop on the top to fit a necklace through it. This piece is in excellent condition given its age and comes with a letter of provenance from Paul Stewart.
