On October 25, 1999, the golf world lost an icon when Payne Stewart tragically lost his life in a plane crash. Before his death, Stewart won the U.S. Open at Pinehurst when he sank a memorable 15-foot put on the 18th hole to secure the victory. A month before his passing, Stewart was a catalyst for the United States Ryder Cup team that overcame a 4-point deficit entering the singles’ matches on the last day. Fittingly, Stewart’s last play on the course was an act of sportsmanship. With the Ryder Cup already secured for the United States, Stewart conceded his par putt and the match to Europe’s Colin Montgomerie on the 18th hole after Montgomerie had been the recipient of constant heckling from the Brookline Country Club crowd. When asked why he conceded the putt Stewart simply replied “This game is about sportsmanship”.
Offered is a scorecard signed by the late great golfer and basketball icon (and avid golfer) Michael Jordan. During the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic in mid-January of 1999, the two, along with Charles Barkley and Roy Green were put together during the celebrity Pro-Am at the Bermuda Dunes Country Club. Jordan had just announced his retirement from basketball on January 13th and two days later, Stewart and Jordan both signed their names in pencil with Stewart’s appearing after the “PROFESSIONAL’S SIGNATURE” and Jordan’s after the “TEAM CAPTAIN’S SIGNATURE”. Stewart shot a one-under par 71, while the team of Green, Jordan and Barkley played a best-ball round of 61 (-11). Official PGA Scorecards are rare to come by and ones signed by Payne Stewart are extremely scarce. This item comes with a full LOA from PSA/DNA (AA07415).
