Back in the late 1970’s when you saw a Yankee wearing one of these navy blue dugout coats you knew World Series time was getting close and that the Yanks would undoubtedly win. This simple but stately jacket was worn by the captain of those World Champions, catcher Thurman Munson.

While most of the Bronx Bombers were a clean cut business-like crew, their Captain was the roughest and scrappiest backstop in the American League. Munson won the 1976 American League MVP Award and then led his boys to back-to-back World Championships in 1977 and ’78. Half-way through the following season the beloved catcher was killed in a tragic plane crash.

This jacket was worn by Munson during those final seasons when he and the Yankees were kings of the baseball world. The jacket was manufactured by Aladen and their label is found inside the left placket of the jacket. The left chest has the famous Yankees “NY” in white on navy tackle twill. The lettering shows light puffing and toning from age. The collar, cuffs and waist band are trimmed in navy and white striped ribbing. Two of the seven original snap buttons are missing from the jacket and there is light toning throughout from age and wear. The ribbing shows good use but is intact. The triangle corner stitching on the hand warmer pockets are frayed from used the interior is intact. The left sleeve features the red, white and blue Yankees hat and bat patch. Below near the wrist is a small hole in the fabric. There are several snags in the jacket’s material and light staining found throughout. Inside the collar is found is a slightly faded, handwritten “15 MUNTZ”, the correct way Munson’s 1970’s era Yankees equipment was marked. The original hang chain inside the collar is missing but the posts remain. A great jacket worn by the most beloved catcher in Yankees history.
