Nicknamed “The Rajah”, Rogers Hornsby is widely considered one of the greatest hitters of all-time. His career .358 batting average was only outdone by the great Ty Cobb, whose career average was .367. While winning two Triple Crowns and batting .400 or better for three seasons, Hornsby is the only player in history to have 40 home runs and bat .400 in one season. This Official National League baseball can be dated to the 1920s and was signed by Hornsby on the side panel in black ink. The red and blue stitched baseball shows signs of age with the discoloration and chip marks throughout. Hornsby signature is clear and has been authenticated by PSA/DNA, who also noted in their letter of authenticity (AA07824) that “There are indications that the signature has been traced over in an unknown hand.” Also accompanying this nearly 100-year old baseball is a typed letter to “Mr. Ralph Hyman, Sports Desk, Times-Union” detailing the acquisition of this baseball from a Pirates-Cardinals game at Forbes Field.
