At the height of World War II, baseball throughout the country relied on the forbearance of the federal government to keep going. Baseball, in kind, did its part to support the efforts, which included exhibition games involving its biggest stars to raise funds and to help increase bond sales. The biggest of these events was the August 26, 1943 game at the Polo Grounds in New York. Stars that appeared were Babe Ruth, Walter Johnson, Tris Speaker, George Sisler, Eddie Collins, Roger Bresnahan, Duffy Lewis and many others. The highlight of the game is when Babe Ruth stepped up to the plate to face The Big Train Walter Johnson, Ruth, in typical big-stage fashion lofted a home run into the right field seats.
