Al Wistert was one of the NFL’s first bonus babies, signing with the Eagles for all of $3,800 in 1943. The team’s veterans originally gave the kid a hard time but soon came to appreciate his ability to excel in both offense and defense. Within three years “Ox” Wistert was the Eagles’ captain and a perennial All-Pro.

He led the team to back-to-back NFL Championships in 1948 and 1949 and in 1950 was named to the very first NFL Pro Bowl. When he retired after the 1951 season the Eagles retired his number 70.

This extraordinary Eagles road jersey was donned by Wistert during the 1946-1951 seasons - the height of his career. The white pullover road jersey has Wistert’s famous number “70” on the front in Eagles green tackle twill. The crotch piece has the dual Mitchell & Ness and MacGregor Goldsmith size 48 label sewn in. The back likewise has Wistert’s number “70” in green. The lettering shows much wear from contact and the edges are frayed and the stitching is loose in areas. The durene jersey shows heavy game use, looking every inch like it was worn by the game’s best two-tool player. The sleeves have been shortened and this combined with the extraordinary wear suggests that it was retired from game use and subsequently used during practice. The buttons on the crotch piece have been removed. There are several clubhouse repairs, most noticeably on the left shoulder and rear shoulder/collar area and there are turf marks and light staining throughout. Please refer to our website goldinauctions.com for detailed photos. A real gamer from the good-old days of smash-mouth football. This jersey comes with a full LOA from noted game used jersey expert Dave Miedema.
