In his Major League debut, Joltin' Joe showed every sign of the greatness to come. He rapped out three hits with a triple and three runs scored in a 14-5 Yankees rout. Although this 7 ½ x 9 ¾ inch photo is date-stamped as having been filed away a week later, on May 12, 1936, it actually bears the all-important handwritten editorial notation of "First Game." What's more, his name is even misspelled once with a single "g"—that's how new to the national scene he was! Even beyond this historical significance, other assets here are the great throwing pose, great image clarity, great Yankee Stadium grandstand and great Yankee pinstripes. Condition-wise, there is a faint background mask; a small lower-left abrasion and clipped corner; also slight paper loss along the glove arm from editorial outlining; otherwise typical minor peripheral wear from newsroom usage. This photograph comes with a LOA for Type I from PSA/DNA.
