Eddie Gottlieb’s contributions to the Philadelphia basketball scene are undoubtedly unparalleled. Gottlieb was one of the main factors in establishing the Philadelphia Warriors and acquiring Wilt Chamberlain.

Offered in this lot are a series of documents that offer a great insight into the history and business dealings of one of Philadelphia’s most powerful and beloved figures. All told, there are 15 documents and notes that provide a unique perspective and offer a piece of Philadelphia basketball history. Some of the documents include contracts, stock purchases and correspondences.

The featured documents in this lot are four involving Wilt Chamberlain. The four documents date from April of 1962 through February of 1967. One document is a copy stating that Chamberlain is “under written contract to play basketball for your team for the 1962-1963 season of the N.B.A.” A 1962 letter to Chamberlain from Edward Hickox, who was the Executive Secretary of the Naismith Hall of Fame Committee and was trying to procure items from Chamberlain to display. The third letter from Gottlieb in February of 1965 to Franklin Mieuli of the San Francisco Warriors working out a payment structure to pay Chamberlain. The last document dated February 1967 says that should anything happen to Gottlieb, Chamberlain would not owe money to the Gottlieb estate. These papers are in good condition ranging from excellent to good. These documents derive directly from the Eddie Gottlieb Estate.
