In addition to his role as “Mr. Basketball” in the Philadelphia area, Eddie Gottlieb was also co-owner of the Negro League Philadelphia Stars.
Offered are documents related to some of the business dealings Gottlieb encountered during his time with the Stars. The first document is on “Brooklyn National League Baseball Club” letterhead dated April 30, 1946. This document references Gottlieb and was addressed to Edward Bolden, the owner of the Philadelphia Stars at that time with Gottlieb. The letter reads in part “Dear Mr. Bolden: By an agreement with Mr. Gottlieb, we are to forward $1,000.” This slightly toned document is on 8 ½ x 11 inch paper and has two folds.
The second document is a three-page document with three folds typed on parchment paper and signed by Eddie Gottlieb and Hilda B. Slie, the Administratrix of the Estate of Edward Bolden. Bolden had passed away in September of 1950 and this agreement was for the operation of the Philadelphia Stars. The light paper is still in good condition and is attached via staples to a light blue paper backing.
The final document is also an agreement between Gottlieb and Hilda May Bolden dated February 1954 and was for the both parties agreeing that the sum of $350.00 was no longer owed. The document is a two-sided 8 ½ x 13 inch paper which is slightly toned and has the Bolden. There is an attached letter addressed to Gottlieb signed by Bolden as well. These documents derive from the Eddie Gottlieb Estate.
