Stan Musial was such an integral piece of the St. Louis Cardinals franchise that he is referred to simply as “The Man.” Musial was a sweet hitting outfielder who led the Cardinals to three World Series titles, in 1942, 44, and 46. Musial was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in his first year on the ballot. His statistics were astronomical: 3,630 hits, 475 home runs, and 20 consecutive All-Star Game appearances. His importance to the Cardinals cannot be overstated, as the great Albert Pujols refused to be nicknamed “El Hombre” by the St. Louis faithful. According to Pujols, there could only be one “Man” in St. Louis.

     The photograph offered here is a black and white 16 x 20 inch picture of Stan Musial before his last game, a 3-2 victory against the Cincinnati Reds on September 29, 1963. Both the Cardinals and Reds are lined up on the base paths to salute their departing peer. Musial went 2-for-3 in this game, contributing an RBI in this 14-inning game. Bob Gibson, who also signed this photograph, pitched the first nine innings of the game. This was Musial’s 3,026th career game.

     This item was signed by Musial and inscribed “9-29-63.” Red Schoendienst, a Hall of Fame second baseman, and Hall of Fame pitcher Bob Gibson also signed this photograph. Schoendienst inscribed “Farewell to Stan” and Gibson wrote “Stan’s Last Game.” All the signatures are signed in blue Sharpie. This item comes with a Musial COA (BB38726) and a PSA/DNA LOA (AB13662).
