A unique lot representing two of baseball’s most dynamic ballplayers in their prime - Ty Cobb and Lou Gehrig. Though both men are in the top tier of Hall of Famers, their personalities couldn’t have been more different - Cobb being one of the most feared and polarizing men to ever play the game and Gehrig remembered as the gallant martyr who sacrificed everything for his team. The 5 x 7 inch image of Cobb captures the Georgia Peach as a young man circa 1912, right in the middle of the amazing nine consecutive season stretch in which he led the American League in hitting.

The 5 ½ x 5 inch photo of Gehrig shows the Iron Horse bursting out of the box after making contact. The newspaper slug on the back is stamped “AUGUST 30 1935”, and a check of the box scores show that in the previous August 28 game Gehrig went 3-for-3 with a homer and two RBI against the White Sox at Comiskey. Both photos are ex-newspaper archive and show light wear from storage. The Cobb has a George Brace stamp dating this to sometime after Cobb’s retirement and the Gehrig has no visible stamp, but has a pencil notation and newspaper clipping affixed to the back. A great collection of period newspaper photos of two of baseball’s most dynamic superstars in their prime.
