In 1989 the US Postal Service released a set of Lou Gehrig commemorative 25 cent stamps. Gehrig was one of the most important figures in baseball during the 1920’s and 30’s. Along with his teammate Babe Ruth, Gehrig helped turn the sport into a respectable American pastime. Gehrig finished his career with a staggering 493 home runs and a .340 batting average.
On the first day of the stamps’ issue, the USPS released a first day cover that included the stamp, a portrait of Gehrig, and a synopsis of his career. Offered here is one such first day cover signed by seven baseball players, including Hank Aaron, Buck Leonard, Johnny Mize, Bobby Doerr, George Kell, and others. The ball players signed this commemorative envelope in blue ballpoint pen. This item comes encapsulated by PSA/DNA and is PSA/DNA certified (83176107).
