The 1979 Reds were the final iteration of the feared and renowned “Big Red Machine.” From 1970 to 1979, the Reds won two World Series and four National League pennants behind the hitting of Pete Rose, Johnny Bench, Joe Morgan, Tony Perez, George Foster, and a fearsome supporting cast of hitters throughout the decade. The 1979 edition of the Reds were the first without all-time hit leader Pete Rose. They managed to get to the National League Championship series, where they lost to their bitter rivals, the Pittsburgh Pirates.
