California attorney Gary Davidson was so successful at starting fledgling professional leagues in basketball (ABA) and hockey (WHA), he decided to give football a shot. It didn't work. The World Football League (WFL) lasted two seasons before collapsing under major financial duress. Interestingly, despite the fallout, the WFL was a significant trendsetter for the NFL in two respects. First, the WFL moved their goalposts to the back of the end zone before their long-established counterpart followed suit, and second, the WFL incorporated an "action point" instead of an extra point—the precursor to today's two-point conversion. In their inaugural 1974 season, the Birmingham Americans clinched the championship, amassing a 17-5 record and a 22-21 World Bowl victory over the Florida Blazers. Offered here is a gorgeous 10K-white-gold ring from that historic first-and-only WFL World Bowl. Manufactured by Jonsil, the size 11-1/2 showpiece appears to originate from team investor Edwin Ashton, and it features a 35-point diamond atop a beautifully enameled logo, with more enameling on one shank. NM condition. Accompanied by a 1996 purchase LOA.
