Featured is a Mason City Globe-Gazette newspaper headlined ““IRON MAN” GEHRIG OUT OF BASEBALL” dated Wednesday June 21, 1939, the same day that the New York Yankees would announce Gehrig’s retirement. Gehrig, one of the greatest first baseman in MLB history, set the record for most grand slams at 23, as well as most consecutive games played at 2,130. This newspaper was in reference to Gehrig’s forced retirement at age 36, being diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, most commonly referred to in the U.S. as Lou Gehrig’s disease. He would die just two years later. This newspaper addressed his retirement and the reasons why he would retire. This newspaper is excellent condition considering its age, and has only minimal tears on the front and bottom edges of the papers. All pages are included and are fully intact, with all print clearly visible and legible. This paper is a great addition to any Lou Gehrig or New York Yankee collection.
