In 1980 the USA hockey team shocked the world by defeating the seemingly unstoppable “Red Army” team from the USSR. The stakes of this game were heightened, as the US and USSR were still embroiled in the Cold War. The scrappy USA team was made up of all college players, mostly from Boston and Minnesota, while the USSR team was comprised of seasoned international veterans who played in Russia’s top hockey league. In the game, the USSR went into the third period leading 3-2, but the United States scored two late goals to upset the Red Army 4-3. The game was immortalized by Al Michaels’ famous call, “Do you believe in miracles? Yes!” Two days later, the United States defeated the Finnish team to clinch the gold medal.

This white USA hockey sweater features “USA” sewn on the front in blue and red tackle twill. “MIRACLE” is the name on the back of the jersey, and is sewn on in white tackle twill. The number “80” on the back is signed by 17 members of the Miracle on Ice team, including team captain Mike Eruzione, goalie Jim Craig, Neal Broten, Dave Christian, John Harrington, Steve Janaszak, Rob McClanahan, Ken Morrow, Jack O’Callahan, Mike Ramsey, Buzz Schneider, Dave Silk, Eric Strobel, Phil Verchota, Mark Wells, Craig Patrick and Mark Johnson. They signed the blue and red tackle twill “80” in silver Sharpie. This item comes with a JSA COA (WP018436).
