Ranked third on The Sporting News’ list of 100 Greatest Baseball Players, Ty Cobb was a one man wrecking crew during the early 20th century. He still holds the record for highest career batting average, at .367, and is second all-time in career hits. Cobb played all but two of his 24 seasons for the Detroit Tigers, establishing himself as their star player and most popular fan attraction.

Cobb was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1936, as a member of their inaugural class. Cobb received the most votes of all the inductees, a group of players that included Babe Ruth, Christy Mathewson, Walter Johnson, and his fierce rival Honus Wagner. Cobb’s record of receiving 98.2% of the induction vote stood until 1992, when Tom Seaver topped his mark.

The item offered here is a 1926-29 Exhibits baseball card signed by Cobb himself. The card shows Cobb swinging at the plate wearing his Tigers’ uniform. Cobb signed the bottom of the card is slightly faded, but still eminently legible, black pen. This item has been encapsulated by SGC and authenticated by JSA (X45018).
