Pictured here are “Shoeless” Joe Jackson and Bill Carrigan, two famous figures of the late dead-ball era. Jackson was a sweet-hitting outfielder for the Philadelphia A’s, Cleveland Indians, and Chicago White Sox. Jackson is most well known for his involvement in the 1919 Chicago Black Sox scandal, which saw him banned for life from baseball by Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis. It is widely debated to what extent Jackson was involved with the fix, as he vehemently denied the allegations for the remainder of his life. What is not up for debate is Jackson’s skill as a ballplayer. In his first full season, Jackson hit .408 for the Cleveland Indians. He led the league in hits, doubles, and triples multiple times, and were he not banned from baseball, Jackson would surely be a member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

Bill Carrigan was a player and manager for the Boston Red Sox. He presided over the Red Sox for their last World Series victory before 2004. Along with Terry Francona, Carrigan is the only Red Sox manager to win two World Series with the team. Carrigan is perhaps most famous for managing Babe Ruth, who called him the best manager he ever played under.

This picture shows Jackson and Carrigan standing next to each other, with Jackson leaning on a baseball bat. Both are wearing uniforms, with Jackson donning a White Sox uniform and Carrigan a Red Sox jersey. Handwritten beneath their images are signatures of their names that cannot attributed to Jackson or Carrigan. “White Sox” and “Mgr Boston” and an illegible word are below the names. This photograph is an incredible piece of lost baseball history and would be an invaluable addition to any collection.
