Kenesaw Mountain Landis was the first commissioner of baseball, and remains one of its most polarizing figures. Perhaps best known for his handling of the 1919 Chicago White Sox scandal, Landis is widely credited with cleaning up baseball and making it more reputable and less lawless. As a result of the Black Sox scandal Landis banned eight members of the White Sox, including Shoeless Joe Jackson and Buck Weaver. His handling of this incident is indicative of his style of leadership, which was typified by a strict adherence to the rules and no tolerance for lawlessness. Before his tenure as commissioner, Landis was a federal judge dedicated to reining in Big Business.
Landis is pictured here looking away from the camera, dressed in a sharp suit. He signed the bottom right portion of the portrait in black pen. He added the date, April 10, 1941. The frame is 18.75 x 16.5 inches and the picture itself is 7 x 9.5 inches. This item comes pre-certified by Steve Grad of Beckett Authentication.
