Jackie Robinson 70th anniversary auction to benefit JRF ending April 29
Ask a Brooklyn Dodger fan and he’ll tell you that the 1953 team was the best of ‘em all. Jackie Robinson, Duke Snider, Gil Hodges and Carl Furillo were all in their prime and the pitching rotation of Carl Erskine, Preacher Roe, Billie Loes and Johnny Podres was the best in the National League.
The team won 105 games and collectively hit 208 home runs. The team was later immortalized in the best-selling book “The Boys of Summer” by Roger Kahn who covered them as a young beat writer. This outstanding large format photograph captures what was probably the greatest Dodger team of them all.
21 members of the “Boys of Summer” have signed their likenesses in black and blue pen: Jackie Robinson, Duke Snider, Gil Hodges, Jim Gilliam, Carl Erskine, Joe Black, Preacher Roe, Don Zimmer (signed twice), Clem Labine, George Shuba, Billy Loes, Johnny Podres, Ben Wade, Carl Furillo, Don Thompson, Bobby Morgan, Jim Hughes and skipper Chuck Dressen. This wonderful large-format photo also has the signatures of trainer Doc Wendler and clubhouse manager John Griffin. Of note is bat boy Charlie “The Brow” De Giovanna’s signature - “Charlie The Brow” has gone down in collecting lore for being the culprit behind all the “clubhouse” signatures often encountered on Dodgers team balls.
The photo shows some creasing and cracking, most noticeably along the top edges. A tremendous signed piece that perfectly captures “the Boys of Summer” made famous by Roger Kahn’s best-selling book. Professionally matted and framed to a 17 x 20 inch dimension. The photo comes with a full LOA from Steve Grad at Beckett Authentication for the signature and a prior JSA Auction Letter.
