Jackie Robinson 70th anniversary auction to benefit JRF ending April 29
Graded 96 MINT 9 by SGC. Hall of Famer, in a Rookie Card appearance from its issue's scarcer "High Number" series. This is the only example at its tier (with none graded higher) among a total of 231 copies recorded in SGC's census reporting. Almost never has a '49 Bowman Paige looked so crisp, or the great pitcher's portrait seemed so clear, as on the face of the offered treasure. "Pack-fresh," seems inadequate for this amazing specimen, and the phrase in fact understates the card's virtually matchless visual character. Corners, edges and print quality are mentioned only to acknowledge their nearly incomparable closeness to perfection. Paige, pitching star in the Negro Leagues and the Major Leagues, was too little appreciated by card company planners, and this elusive rookie card is a widely coveted prize among the charismatic star's few "mainstream" depictions. This card will meet and exceed the most exclusive standards for worthiness of appeal. Truly noteworthy Mint condition.
