When Babe Ruth made his final appearance at Yankee Stadium on June 13, 1948, it was painfully obvious to all that the Babe had but months to live. Sports fans struggled to comprehend what baseball would be like without its greatest star. Even though he’d been retired since 1935, the Babe was still the face of baseball, and he had spent his retirement traveling the country promoting the game and entertaining his fans.
Now, in the spring of 1948, the Babe’s days were drawing to a close. Still, although he was wracked with pain from the cancer that would soon overcome him, Ruth graciously found the time and strength to sign autographs for his beloved fans. This immense 19 ½ x 25 inch photographic poster was signed by Ruth just two days after his appearance at Yankee Stadium, and two months and a day before he would pass away. Inscribed “To my good friend Bill Hillburn from Babe Ruth 6-15-48”, the signature is in blue fountain pen, his St. Mary’s School script still as elegant and precise as ever. A beautiful image that embodies all the elegance and power of a Ruth swing and capped off by a tremendous signature. The photograph has been professionally matted and framed to a Ruthian 27 x 33 inches. The photograph comes with a full LOA from PSA/DNA (Z01955) for the signature.
