The 1986 World Series. Would the Red Sox finally break the curse of the Bambino…or would the New York Mets bring the glory back to the Big Apple? Down three games to two, the Mets won in miraculous style in game six, as Mookie Wilson’s dribbler down to first base sneaked past Bill Buckner in the bottom of the tenth and Ray Knight triumphantly scored from second. The Mets went on to win Game 7 to claim the championship. Darryl Strawberry, the young Mets outfielder, hit a key eighth inning leadoff home run off of Al Nipper to give the Mets a two-run cushion and helped seal the victory.
This World Series Trophy features 26 gold painted flags, representing each team in the American and National League. On the base of the trophy are the World Series team logos for the Red Sox and Mets. The gold Mets logo has “3rd World Series” and “Shea Stadium.” Rising from the base is a royal crown atop of a gold painted band, secured to the base by a sliver painted baseball. “World Series Champions New York Mets 1986 Darryl Strawberry” is printed on a gold band circling the 23-inch diameter black wooden base.
