Hall of Fame shortstop Luke Appling spent the majority of his career with the Chicago White Sox where he was the all-time leader in most games played and most double plays by a shortstop, and was the all-time leader in putouts and assists as an American League shortstop when he retired in 1967. Appling also finished his career with 2,749 hits and a .310 batting average and was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1964.
Appling spent the majority of his post-career as a minor league manager and served on the coaching staffs of the Cleveland Indians, Detroit Tigers, Baltimore Orioles, Kansas City Athletics and the White Sox. This offered jersey is from Appling’s coaching stint with the Chicago White Sox in 1970. This button-down size 42 Wilson flannel jersey features “Chicago” sewn diagonally on the front of the jersey in white and blue tackle twill and a paraph. In the paraph is in the same white and blue pattern with “WHITE SOX” sewn on in blue. Appling’s number “4” is sewn on the left center in white and blue tackle twill and the short-style sleeves have armpit air holes and each sleeve has blue/white/blue piping. The same piping pattern runs around the collar and neck. The back of the jersey has “APPLING” and his number “4” sewn on in blue and white tackle twill. “Appling” is embroidered in blue on a gray patch that is sewn directly to the inside back neck. The bottom front left tail has the Wilson tag and has “1970-4” embroidered in blue beneath the Wilson tag. Appling signed his name on the upper left chest above “CHICAGO”. This jersey displays light use and comes with a LOA from PSA/DNA (AC01274) and a LOA from noted game used jersey expert Dave Miedema. His number is retired. He hit a home run in the Cracker Jack old timers game in Washington, D.C. at the age of 75.
