Presented here is a letter typed and signed by the 31st President of the United States, Herbert Hoover, during his post-presidency halcyon days. Hoover was president from 1929 to 1933, and was faced with numerous obstacles to creating a more perfect union. Eight months after Hoover ascended to the presidency, the Great Depression crippled the American economy and effectively doomed his hope of achieving a second term in office.
In this letter, Hoover writes to his longtime colleague Lawrence Richey. During his post-presidency years, Richey was in charge of compiling and describing Hoover’s commerce and presidency papers. In this letter, Hoover asks “Is there any record of the dates when Paul Block dined at the White House – or called at the office?” Hoover signed the letter, which is dated to September 17th, 1934, as “H.H.” in black pen.
