Seven-time All-Star closer Lee Smith wore this jersey during his brief tenure with the New York Yankees in 1993. Smith joined the team on August 31st, with Rick Batchelor heading to St. Louis to complete the trade. Smith pitched in eight games with the Yankees, recording three saves and maintaining a 0.00 ERA. This jersey formerly belonged to Frank Howard, a coach for the Yankees at the time, and the number was changed from Howard’s “46” to Smith’s preferred “47”. This pinstriped button-down home jersey has the Yankees “NY” logo sewn on the left chest in navy blue tackle twill. Smith’s number “47” is sewn on the back, with the faded outline of Howard’s “46” still visible. A Russell Athletic size “52” tag is sewn on the front left tail above a “Howard 92” tag. A “3[inch] Extra Body Length and Sleeve Length” flag is attached to the Russell Athletic tag. Smith signed the “4” on the back of the jersey in silver marker, adding the inscription “Game Used” to his signature. This item comes with a LOA from Lee Smith who in his LOA states that he wore this jersey and that it has been in his private collection.
