Presented is an original steel locker from the original Yankee Stadium that has been attributed to Lou Gehrig. This locker stands 78 inches tall, 24 inches wide and 21 inches deep. This was salvaged from the original Yankee Stadium during the renovations that closed the historic ballpark following the 1973 season and remained closed for the 1974 and 1975 seasons.

This particular locker was given to Bert Padell, who was a Yankees batboy in 1949 and 1950, by longtime Yankees’ equipment manager “Big” Pete Sheehy. Sheehy was the one who issued Mickey Mantle his famous number “7” and was tossed Gehrig’s glove by Gehrig himself when he realized his career was over saying “I’m done, Pete”. Padell’s two seasons as batboy coincided with Casey Stengel’s first two years as Yankees’ manager and Padell and maintained relationships with former players over the years through his accounting and business management firm. Padell’s clients included Joe DiMaggio, Phil Rizzuto and Mantle, along with other celebrities.

There is currently a Lou Gehrig locker on display at the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. Padell, as stated in the notarized LOA that accompanies this locker, was given this locker by the Yankees clubhouse staff during the stadium renovation and was told that this very locker was Gehrig’s locker. Please note that Goldin Auctions cannot state that this locker was or was not ever used by Lou Gehrig. Please note that due to the size and weight of this item, shipping costs could be higher than normal. In addition, this item will not be shipped from our New Jersey headquarters but drop-shipped from Texas and freight costs will be determined based on shipping from Texas.
