In 1969, the Chicago Cubs finished in second place in the National League East Division, eight games behind the surprising New York Mets. Led by a pair of 20 game winners in Fergie Jenkins and Bill Hands, the Cubs recorded their best season since their pennant winning campaign of 1945. Ron Santo paced the offense, crushing 29 homers and driving in 123 RBI, while 38-year-old Ernie Banks contributed an additional 23 home runs and 106 RBI.
