The late 1990’s saw Madonna reinvent herself yet again, this time as a mother. To commemorate the birth of her first child, a girl named Lourdes, Madonna began work on what would become her seventh studio album. Called “Ray of Light,” the record mixed ambient dance music and Middle Eastern influences together with her newfound Kabbalah faith and Ashtanga Yoga. No less than five singles were released off the record including the title track “Ray of Light.” The accompanying video, directed by Jonas Akerlund, featured Madonna singing in locations around the globe, and was inspired by the experimental 1982 film Koyaaisqatsi.

While the record went on to be ranked as one of the best albums of the decade, the video for “Ray of Light” garnered a Grammy Award as well as the more coveted MTV Video Music Award For Best Video Of The Year. This is the actual award that was presented for the “Ray of Light” video. The award is topped off by the iconic astronaut with the MTV flag mounted on a round black base. An engraved brass plaque reads: “VIDEO MUSIC AWARD 1997-1998 BEST MUSIC VIDEO OF THE YEAR MADONNA RAY OF LIGHT CARESSE NORMAN.” The award stands 12 inches high and shows just light wear from display, including a small crack on the “M” where the astronaut stands. A rarely seen award celebrating an artist whose rise to fame coincided with the rise MTV and music videos.
