In 1930, Lou Gehrig had finally emerged from the shadow of teammate Babe Ruth. Though he would never be as charismatic as the Babe, Gehrig was able to post statistics that could only be described as “Ruthian.” For the first time Gehrig surpassed the 40-home run mark, a number only very few players had reached at the time. Gehrig ended the 1930 season with a batting average of .379, his personal best. He also led the American League in RBIs, total bases and plate appearances, and for the second time in his career, Gehrig slugged 40+ doubles and 40+ home runs in a season, and he would repeat that feat again in 1934 (in the history of the game, only one other player, Albert Pujols, matched this record). Sometime during that magical season Gehrig signed this 1930 Reach Official American League ball. The ball itself shows good toning throughout with some light staining and scuffs. Gehrig’s signature is in very strong black fountain pen and transcends any of the overall toning of the leather. With the bold signature that leaps off the leather, this Lou Gehrig single-signed ball displays very well. The ball comes with a LOAs from JSA (B21197) and two LOAs from PSA/DNA (E53614 & AE06796) for the signature. PSA/DNA has graded Gehrig's signature a solid 6.
