John Lennon is one of the unparalleled musical geniuses of the 20th century, a free-thinking visionary able to link disparate musical styles into some of the world’s most notable pop music. Lennon, like the rest of his Beatles bandmates, was heavily influenced by Eastern music and culture, especially that emanating from India. The Beatles composed most of the songs on their seminal Abbey Road and The Beatles albums in India studying transcendental meditation. Part of Lennon’s embrace of Indian culture comes in the form of his interest in the harmonium, or pump organ. The distinctive tone of the harmonium can be heard in the Beatles song “We Can Work It Out”, one of the Beatles numerous number one hits.

Offered here is a harmonium personally owned by John Lennon and was part of the historic Sotheby's "The Collection of John Lennon and Yoko Ono" Auction of 123 items that were sold in June of 1984. The harmonium in question measures approximately 22 x 10.5 x 11 inches and was produced by Sardar Flute. The Sardar logo and “Made in India” are applied to the front of this musical instrument. A “Chaitsing Gurbanxsingh” sticker is also applied to the front of this instrument. The keys are a traditional black and white color, and an intricate design is carved on the top of the wooden pump organ. Two wood panels, each with three circular holes cut out of them, are affixed to the back of this harmonium. Eight off-white knobs are present on the front of this instrument. This harmonium is in good condition, however it does not appear to be currently functioning. This is an incredible opportunity to own a musical instrument from the most influential pop music act of all time! This item comes with the original red certificate of ownership from the Sotheby's Auction.
