In the late 1960’s world-renowned actor Paul Newman became interested in racing cars. What was at first a hobby turned into a serious second career with the actor competing in several different genres and classes of auto racing. This fire suit was worn by the Cool Hand Luke actor during the 1979 racing season.

Newman can be seen wearing this red suit in a Datsun print ad and on the cover of the July 30 edition of AutoWeek. Both these photo matches are included with the suit in this lot. The belted one-piece red fire suit has the actor’s name embroidered on the front in white along with sponsor patches for Budweiser, Datsun, Canon, Kendall and Bob Sharp Racing. Two white stripes run down each sleeve with a Budweiser logo patch on each shoulder. The back has a Goodyear patch on the shoulders above a large Budweiser logo patch. Two white stripes run down each leg and the wrist and ankle openings are trimmed with white ribbing. The suit shows good use by Newman, with some loose threads and puckering to the patches. The red shell has faded slightly and the white rigging and stripes show toning from age and race use. A very unique piece of Paul Newman’s second successful career as a champion racecar driver. The suit comes with a Letter of Provenance from Dave Pittenger, who in his letter details how the suit was acquired in 1983.
