The Hall of Fame center Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was personally awarded this Alchesay High School Basketball plaque in appreciation of his season spent with the team in 1998-99. Abdul-Jabbar had previously experienced life on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation near Phoenix, where Alchesay is located, to perform research for his book Black Profiles in Courage and the Buffalo Soldiers who inhabited the area. One thing led to another, and Abdul-Jabbar found himself as an assistant coach at the basketball-crazy high school and living on the reservation, as a way to help empower the students at Alchesay to attend college and become successful in spite of the conditions forced upon them on the reservation. This plaque is in the shape of the state of Arizona. It measures 8.25 x 9 inches at its widest dimensions. A placard that reads “In Appreciation To Coach Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for the 1998-99 Season” and “Alchesay High School Falcons Basketball” is affixed to the upper area of the plaque. This item comes with a LOA signed by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
