The Hall of Fame center Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was presented with this University of Dayton Diversity Lecture Series gift by the Ohio university in 2011. Abdul-Jabbar’s UCLA Bruins won the 1967 NCAA title after defeating the Dayton Flyers 79-64 at Freedom Hall in Louisville, Kentucky. Abdul-Jabbar gave a talk at Dayton relating to his critically acclaimed documentary On the Shoulders of Giants: The Story of the Greatest Basketball Team You Never Heard Of. On the Shoulders of Giants tells the story of the Harlem Rens, a pioneering African-American barnstorming team forced to battle against the forces of segregation and discrimination in a pre-NBA world.
This offered figural gift takes the shape of a large marble-like centerpiece and a clear 3.5 x 3.5-inch base. The base is detachable from the large marble. This item measures 5 inches tall when both pieces are combined. A placard on the base reads “University of Dayton / Diversity Lecture Series / Kareem Abdul-Jabbar / March 14, 2011”. This item comes with a LOA signed by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar himself.
