Kareem Abdul-Jabbar won the first of his record six NBA MVP awards after his sophomore season with the Milwaukee Bucks in 1970-71. Abdul-Jabbar, then known as Lew Alcindor, led the NBA in scoring with a 31.7 points per game average while collecting 16 rebounds and dishing 3.1 assists per game. With Abdul-Jabbar in the frontcourt and Oscar Robertson leading the backcourt, the Bucks finished the regular season with a 66-16 record, by far the best in the franchise’s three seasons to date. The Bucks, who boasted the best offensive and defensive ratings in the league, easily dispatched the San Francisco Warriors and Los Angeles Lakers in a pair of five-game series to open their playoff run. The Bucks swept the Washington Bullets in a four-game NBA Finals, led by the 27 point, 18.5 rebound per game effort by Abdul-Jabbar, the NBA Finals MVP. Abdul-Jabbar dominated the MVP voting in 1970-71, finishing with 133 first place votes, compared to the four votes received by MVP runner-up Jerry West.

This Maurice Podoloff Trophy, the first of two-consecutive won by Abdul-Jabbar, measures approximately 46 inches tall and stands on a 10 x 10-inch pedestal. A plaque attached to the base reads “Podoloff Trophy / 1970-71 / National Basketball Association / Most Valuable Player / Lew Alcindor / Chosen In A Player Poll By NEA Service”. A smaller 5 x 5-inch pedestal stands on the base, with a statuette of a basketball player standing on a cylinder mounted atop this pedestal. The statuette and cylinder measure 12 inches tall. A plaque that reads “Podoloff Trophy / 1970-71” is affixed to this pedestal. The top of the trophy is mounted with four 6-inch high basketball players surrounding a fifth 14-inch high basketball player. The top section measures 9 x 9 inches and is supported with four gold-colored columns. This is a historically significant trophy and it derives directly from Kareem Abdul-Jabbar with a personally hand-signed LOA from Kareem accompanying this item.
