Charles Comiskey will always be remembered as the owner who allegedly inspired the White Sox to throw the 1919 World Series. Whether this is true or not is a matter of opinion, but Comiskey’s impact on the team from Chicago is without question. As owner of the Chicago White Sox for 30 years, Comiskey saw five American League Pennants, two World Series titles, and built the stadium that would bear his name. He also oversaw some of the day to day operations of the club, as this rare, one-of-a-kind item seems to indicate. This letter is dated “Nov.8th,1926.” and addressed to Mr. Chas Stis of St. Louis, Missouri, details a potential player named “Owens”.

The letter reads:

Friend Stis: I am writing you in reference to young Owens. Judging by our present plans, it does not look as though we will be able to afford him a try-out on the spring training trip; unless, however, he looks good enough in your mind to be worth a Major League trial at this time. We are up to the limit of players and do not want to carry any more than we have to; unless they have a chance to make the club; or, would, with another year’s experience. Kindly let me hear from you at your convenience in this regard and with best wishes, re-main –“.  It is typed on Chicago White Sox letterhead, and personally signed Chas a Comiskey in black pen. The letter is in good condition, displaying toning due to age and two folds, consistent with being placed in an envelope. This letter also comes with the original envelope addressed to “Mr. Chas Stis 4360- Bingham St., St Louis, Mo.,”. The postmark is “NOV 8  7 PM 1926” and has the White Sox emblem on the upper left corner. There are tear marks where the envelope was sealed and opened. This item comes with a LOA from JSA (Z79870).
