Hall of Fame center Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was presented with this M.B.W.A. Sam Davis Memorial MVP trophy for the 1970-71 NBA season. Abdul-Jabbar, in his sophomore NBA season and already the league’s best player, averaged 31.7 points, the highest mark in the NBA, and 16 rebounds per game for the newly dominant Milwaukee Bucks. Abdul-Jabbar, then known as Lew Alcindor, led the Bucks to a 66-win regular season and the Midwest Division title. The Bucks defeated the San Francisco Warriors and Los Angeles Lakers in a pair of five-game series to open the playoffs, before sweeping Westley Unseld and the Baltimore Bullets in a four game Finals.

The offered MVP trophy, voted on by the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association, measures a statuesque 27 inches tall. It is constructed of a 7 x 7-inch pedestal supporting an ornate trophy cup and a statuette of a basketball player perched on top of the trophy. A plaque affixed to the pedestal reads “Sam Davis Memorial Award / Most Valuable Pro Player / 1970-71 / Lew Alcindor / Milwaukee Bucks / Presented By / M.B.W.A.” This trophy is in good condition. This historically significant award derives directly from Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and a personally hand-signed LOA from Kareem will accompany this item.
